Hi,

Any suggestions for general mechanic in Utica / New Hartford area that understands Turbo Subarus. This would be for general things like tune up issues, brakes.

Also any suggestions for garage mechanics who can install Stage II parts, up pipe, downpipe. Guys like Innovative won't do these types of installs anymore, they will just tune after it is on.

thanks

I'm from the area but only recently got my subie so don't have a lot of input on good places.

I always took my VWs to <Salisbury Motor Car> and although they are VW/Audi specialists they work on Subies too. I plan on bringing them my WRX for non-warranty work/mods I can't DIY since I have a long, trusting relationship with them. Art, the owner, is as honest as the day is long

I've seen them work on track/rally cars so I'm sure bolt on parts would not be a problem. Consider them an option if you don't mind going a little out of your way.

When I was shopping used before I settled on the WRX I checked out this place: http://www.snydersauto.com/. Heard mixed reviews on them but they do seem to at least be enthusiasts and I think mod-friendly. Might be another, closer option though I can't vouch for them at all.

Salisbury not work out for you?

Well, you're basically next door to me, but I don't have any shops I can recommend out here. Nimey's? Nope. Any flavor of Steet or Carbone? Nope. Only semi-positive service experiences I've had in the county were at Nye in Oneida. Sorry.

do you have any DIY space? None of those jobs/part swaps really calls for much more than jackstands and mostly basic tools.

Also, might be an adventure, but maybe just tail one of the waytoomany WRXs ripping around (it's the only thing I can hear above the police sirens wailing...they have been super active lately) and accost them, compliment their ride, ask where they got it done, and then decide after the conversation if you think that person knows what they're talking about.

I called Salisbury per suggestion above. The person I talked to said they don't work on turbo Subaru's.

This is frustrating. What do you guys do about dealing with future emissions inspections when you go to Stage II? I'm worried now about trying to get the uppipe and downpipe in and then failing an inspection later on.

Innovative is sending people to Moore Performance in PA for that sort of stuff then they can do the tune.

Work: I always did most of my own work. I took it to a shop twice, once to bleed the clutch (I wasn't having luck) and once to replace a transmission seal. There's plenty of writeups and how tos that, if you have a garage or a friends garage, aren't difficult, just daunting the first time you do it.

Emissions: I always went to a friend of a friend at a non subaru dealer. I had a midpipe with a fake cat in it as a backup. If the OBDII checked out ok they didn't care. Now I live in indiana where we have zero inspections for anything ever.

The only time I had an issue with an inspection after I went stage 2 was when I went to the Subaru dealership. And I wasn't even there for an inspection, they just felt the need to mention that I wouldn't pass an inspection because of the exhaust on my car. Had my Legacy GT inspected at the local Monro while stage 2 and never had an issue at all. A proper tune should defeat any emissions CEL that might arise and most shops only look at the safety stuff and don't give two craps about the emissions stuff as long as you pass the OBD-II test.

Posted this on the legacygt forum. I've been going to Automotive Service Center for years. They've worked on 4 vehicles during this time period (1 Chevy, 3 Subarus) but the work has been mostly basic brake jobs, A/C repair, and inspections. Nothing specific to a turbo Subaru. They don't seem to target a specific brand of vehicle. Might be worthwhile to check them out. They've always been friendly so they should be able to give you an honest answer if they can help. Let me know if it works out.
