Hey all,
98 Impreza (stock 2.2, lgt 5-speed trans, various lgt parts under the hood).

I've noticed recently that my car has a chirping sound when warmed up at idle. Only seems to happen when car is stopped next to something substantial (eg, parked in the garage, next to other cars, etc). Was idling rough which I thought was the culprit, so I cleaned out the IACV, which took care of the rough idle, but not the chirping.

People having similar issues over on Nasioc mostly point to AC tensioner/belts/bearings. My car doesn't have an AC unit at all, so that ain't it. Might I hear this noise if there was a loose screw somewhere underneath the front?
Thanks for any/all help! :D

Ben

I'm not sure what you're describing, but is it belt squeel? If so, then it's likely either a bad belt or a loose belt.

What's the duration and frequency of the chirps? Perhaps post a video?

Serpentine belt is brand new and quite tight. Replacing it didn't make a lick of difference. Makes me think it's probably not belt related, but I'm no expert. I'll take a video of it tomorrow morning on my way to work and get it up as soon as I can.

Edit: Okay, I've got the video on my phone but no wifi/4g in the office sucks. Will probably go out to my car and upload during lunch. Is youtube the best way to do that, or does this site have file hosting?

Sounds almost like a bad bearing in something on the belt drive (alternator, ps pump, etc). Perhaps the belt is too tight?

Is it a manual? Throwout bearings can chirp. If the sound goes away when you push in the clutch that's a telltale sign.

It is a 5 speed, but the noise does not change when I put in the clutch, though.

I know I'm bringing back a dead thread and this car's gone now, but for anyone else having this issue, it was the timing belt tensioners. I also swapped the water pump while I was in there, although that didn't get rid of the noise. Tensioners are like $100 at autozone. Job was easy, have fun! :D
